Play a Countdown Conundrum online for free. Rearrange nine scrambled letters to find one nine-letter word. This browser practice game uses the purple letter tiles and nine-letter puzzle list from AppMum’s Letters and Numbers app. Play on your phone, tablet or computer without installing anything.

How to solve a Countdown Conundrum

  1. Choose your pace. Practice has no timer. For a faster challenge, select 30 seconds, 60 seconds or three minutes.
  2. Start the round. The game reveals nine scrambled letters. A timed challenge begins as soon as the tiles appear.
  3. Build your answer. Tap the tiles or type on your keyboard. You must use all nine letters, with each tile used once.
  4. Submit your word. A correct nine-letter word earns 10 points. If you get stuck, select Reveal answer to finish the round and see the solution.

Find familiar word patterns

Start by looking for common endings such as -ing, -tion or -ment. Then check whether the remaining letters form a familiar beginning. The same letters can look very different after a shuffle, so try rearranging them when you feel stuck.

For example, the scrambled letters TIONEDUCA can form EDUCATION. It helps to spot the ending -tion first. Another approach is to separate the vowels and consonants, then look for familiar pairs of letters.

Practice mode or a timed challenge

Practice mode lets you think through each puzzle without a countdown. Choose a timed round when you want to test how quickly you can recognise anagrams. Shuffle changes the tile order while keeping the same puzzle. Undo removes your most recent letter, and Clear lets you start your answer again.

The game chooses from over 8,000 nine-letter puzzles from the app. Some words have more than one valid anagram. Any nine-letter answer in the game’s word list is accepted if it uses exactly the available letters. The results show the original answer and accepted alternatives.

Countdown Conundrum questions

How many letters does a conundrum use?

Each puzzle has nine letters. You need to rearrange all nine to form a single word. A shorter word does not solve the puzzle.

Can I play without a timer?

Yes. Select Practice before starting your round. You can keep trying until you solve the conundrum or reveal the answer.

What if I find a different nine-letter answer?

The game accepts alternative words from its word list when they use all the same letters. You do not have to guess the exact original word if another accepted anagram fits.
