Home Schooling Apps are becoming a must have for many parents.

Free Learning Apps – Five tips for home schooling

Set up a learning area

Make sure your child has an area set aside for them to study and learn.

Find out what your child should know

You should talk to your child’s teacher for information on the syllabus and what your child should be studying. You should be able to find the curriculum documents on line. The school may be offering on-line help and maybe interactive lessons. Your child may be able to submit work and assignments from home for the teacher to mark. For all this you obviously need good internet speeds and bandwidth. You also need a home computer and some people do not have a home computer. More people would have a smart phone and/or tablet and there are apps you can use on your phone to help your child continue with their education.

There may be less specific advice that you can follow about the broad curriculum.. Education authorities are putting on line advice about home schooling and you should check what your authority is doing in this area. They should provide useful resource information.

It is worth looking at what your national broadcaster produces in the way of educational resources. Here in Australia, the ABC produces many educational programs. Below is the first screen you see when you google ABC for schools. There are lots of programs you can download. This should be the same in most countries.

Know what Technology you should have

If you do have a computer it’s worth checking what programs you will need to access the work the school send. You may need a pdf reader, Adobe Acrobat Reader (which is free) or any specific video players such as Abode Flashplayer.

If they are not free, it’s worth checking if the school has a shared license or access package you can use. Companies are offering some online programs and services free during the COVID-19 period. Adobe, for instance, is offering school IT administrators free access to its Creative Cloud facilities until May 2020.

You may also need to download teleconferencing facilities such as Zoom or Skype that teachers may use to deliver lessons. These are free, but make sure you are downloading from the official developers, as some other sites may expose your computer to malware.

A structured day

It is generally recommended that students learning at home should be given a varied timetable structured in a similar way to their school routine. As in school, there will a lunch break and also smaller breaks. In the States they talk about “recess” whilst here in Queensland it is “little lunch” and in England it used to be in my day just “break’. At infant school it was “playtime’. The learning part or lessons should be in small manageable sections. How long the sessions should be would depend on the age of the kids.

Be there to help if needed

Let your child learn by themselves but be there to help if needed.

Free learning apps – Spelling Bee & Times Tables

I wrote this app with my own children in mind. All five of my children attended and one still does attend Herberton Primary School in Far North Queenland. Therefore I am very familiar with the weekly spelling list routine in Queensland schools. The app is free to try and has no ads as it is designed for children.

This is what I wrote when I first put the app on the App Store.

I first decided to write this app to try to fix the constant struggle I had been having with my then 9 year old son. It was so difficult to get him to complete his weekly spelling words.

His homework and probably that of 90% of the primary school kids in Australia mainly consists of 10-15 spelling words of which he has to  Look, Say, Cover and Write.

He also has to learn a particular times table by writing it out. As I am not especially organised I did not have the time to do this with him. Unfortunately I was not able to even ensure he was doing his homework. Sadly we were often trying to do it on the way to school Friday morning, the day of the test.

I work full time and have 5 children. It is not just the lack of time. I also found his delaying tactics excruciating. He searched for his homework book, pencil, pencil sharpener, got a drink, went to the toilet.  Often he  just seemed to go missing for ages.

By then I generally give up.

Spelling App – a Homework Helper

So I wrote the app and then he could do his spelling list. Below is a screen shot from the app to show you what it can do.

Also as a bonus I added times tables practice. Below are screen shots from the app.

He could do this on iPhone or IPAD. Happily he could complete homework on the way to football training or shopping. I have recently updated this app to include printing completed spelling lists results.  Also there is an option to email to the teacher. I have recently added over 1000 grade appropriate spelling words. This will help your child get up to speed for spelling at their year level. Homework help is available on iPad, iPod and iPhone.

Enter Weekly Spelling Words.

Each week as the homework spelling list comes home with your child from school, enter the new list into the app.

Record the word and sentence to give the word context. Have your child complete the spelling list  until 100% is achieved. A random test can also be selected from all the spelling lists entered so far.

It is good to see the word in context in a sentence and for your child to hear the word and get an extra clue from the sentence. The child types the word in and hopefully gets a gold star.
